Effects of Chemical Control Measures against Cotton Insect Pests on Spider Mites and their Natural Enemies

The effect of Metasystox R, Ekatin, and Dimecron was evaluated against 3 species of spider mites (Tetranychus cinnabarinus [Bois.], Brevipalpus obovatus Donn., Tarsonemus spec.) and their natural enemies for three successive seasons 1965, 1966, and 1967. The results indicated that all pesticides tested gave full protection against mite infestation for eight weeks when applied early in the season to control cotton insect pests. Late in the season, during July and August, outbreaks of spider mites followed the use of the three materials that it was necessary to apply acaricides to circumvent the mite outbreaks. Predatory mites were not recovered from cotton leaves until late in the season. However, during August and September their population increased gradually and were able to overcome mite infestation. Zusammenfassung Wirkungen von chemischen Masnahmen gegen Baumwoll-Schadinsekten auf Spinnmilben und ihre Feinde Von 1965 bis 1967 wurden Baumwollsamlinge mit Metasystox R, Ekatrin und Dimecron zur Bekampfung von Baumwoll-Schadinsekten behandelt und die Wirkungen auf 3 Spinnmilben-Arten (Tetranychus cinnabarinus [Bois.], Brevipalpus obovatus Donn., Tarsonemus spec.) untersucht. Alle 3 Mittel gaben den Pflanzen fur 8 Wochen vollen Schutz, sofern sie in der fruhen Saison angewandt wurden. In der spateren Saison, im Juli/August, folgte dagegen dem chemischen Einsatz der 3 Mittel eine Massenvermehrung der Spinnmilben, so das mit Acariziden nachbehandelt werden muste. Rauberische Milben wurden erst in der spateren Saison festgestellt. Jedoch stieg ihre Dichte im August und September so stark an, das sie imstande waren, die Spinnmilben an der Massenvermehrung zu hindern.
