Role of Diverse Medicinal Algae in a Therapeutic World
2020
Algae are a diverse group that are used in medicine from long times. They produce secondary metabolites, such as proteins, vitamins, fatty acids, pigments, and polysaccharides, which have a pharmaceutical value and play an important role in medicine. Such biologically active products (bromophenols, sulfated polysaccharides, c-phycocyanin, phycobiliprotein, s-carotene, peptides, etc.) can be used as antioxidants, anticancer, antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal), anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, immune enhancer and modulator, antidiabetic, reduction of fats, cosmetic, and thalassotherapy. And this not restricted on marine algae or macroalgae but even microalgae and cyanobacteria can produce pharmaceutical and nutraceutical value products. This study concludes that algae are natural future drugs.
