Factors Affecting the Development of New Matrix Resins for Advanced Composites
1983
Historically, advanced composites utilizing high performance reinforcements such as graphite fibers evolved using matrix resins (principally epoxies) having a pre-existent data base. In most cases a substantial amount of processing and performance experience with these matrix resins had already been achieved in other materials systems and applications such as those involving glass reinforced systems. Therefore, it was natural that the use of these resins was extended to advanced composites. In the early stages of evolution of advanced composites, most requirements for improved matrix resins were satisfied by reformulating the epoxies. However, as advanced composites enter the era where they are in routine production of primary aircraft structure with further applications on the horizon, it is reasonable to ask what factors will determine the directions for the types of new matrix resins to be developed for use in advanced composite materials.
