Phytochemical and Biological Investigations of Ravenia spectabilis engl.: A Brief Overview

2021
Two alkaloids ravenoline (1) and arborinine (2) were obtained from the extracts of the leaves of Ravenia spectabilis  engl. by using vacuum liquid chromatography, gel permeation chromatography and TLC. NMR spectroscopy and comparison of NMR data with those published in the literature were used to identify the compounds. The thrombolytic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of the plant's crude methanolic extract were assessed using pure compounds as well as petroleum ether (PE), carbon tetrachloride (CTC), chloroform (CF), and aqueous (AQ) soluble fractions. The pure compounds and different fractions demonstrated thrombolytic activity ranging from 30.43 to 48.85 % when compared to standard streptokinase in the study (74.34%). The antibacterial activity of all fractions and pure compounds ranged from mild to moderate. The carbon tetrachloride fraction demonstrated moderate antioxidant activity (97.53 \(\mu\)g/ml) when compared to BHT (27.50 \(\mu\)g/ml), while the other fractions demonstrated mild antioxidant activity. The aim of the study was to isolate phytochemicals from the methanolic leaf extract of Ravenia spectabilis engl. and to evaluate the bioactivities of the different fractions of the plant extracts as well as the  isolated pure compounds.
