In 2014, energy wood (firewood and charcoal) represented 70% of the energy consumed in Africa. This average nevertheless masks large disparities between countries and between urban areas – where alternative fuels are at times widely available – and rural areas where this is not the case. This article offers an analysis of the past, present and future issues surrounding this essential resource which is often overlooked in policies, as well as potential actions to address the issue
