Reoperations on the Stomach and Duodenum

2019
Abstract Operations on the stomach and duodenum are performed for six primary reasons: neoplasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, obesity, peptic ulcer disease, trauma, and congenital defects. Any operation done for these reasons can result in long-term complications requiring reoperation. Reasons for reoperation are dependent on the primary pathophysiology and method of reconstruction, including peptic ulcer disease, postgastrectomy syndromes, gastroparesis, roux and afferent limb syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux, and bile reflux gastritis. This chapter describes how these complications may be avoided by attention to details of the first operation and how they are managed either by laparoscopic or open techniques.
