Fusobacterium necrophorum - nicht nur Verursacher des Lemierre-Syndroms

Summary Fusobacterium necrophorum – not just the cause of Lemierre syndrome We report the case of a 37-year-old HIV-positive male patient admitted for li ver abscess. Percutaneous abscess drainage was performed and Fusobacterium necropho rum cultured from the abscess aspirate. The patient recovered rapidly following empiric antibiotic therapy with piperacillin/tazobactam which was switched to oral metronidazole when the culture results became available. The drain was removed after five days and oral metronidazole was given for a total of eight weeks. The microbiological and clinical features of liver abscess due to Fusobacterium necrophorum are discussed.
