Police violence: the case of Indigenous Australians

2017
This chapter analyses police violence in relation to Indigenous people in Australia. It uses a broad concept of violence to include physical violence and other forms of ill‐treatment. Such an approach is consistent with international human rights standards. An important part of the consideration of police violence includes reference to obligations to provide a duty of care to those in custody. The policing of Indigenous people and the use of violence are contextualized within a broader framework of colonial relations.
