Investigation of annular forces using an oscillating, gas‐operated piston gauge

We attempt to understand and measure the frictional forces in the annulus between the piston and the cylinder of a gas‐operated piston gauge by measuring the damping of a vertically oscillating piston. For all gases used, thermal losses in the volume beneath the piston dominate the damping.
