Modeling permanent deformation of the Louisiana ALF crumb rubber modified test sections

2003
This study used a two-dimensional finite element analytical model called FLEXPASS to predict the performance of the Louisiana Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) test pavements. The full scale research program conducted at the Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC) evaluated the performance of crumb rubber modified hot mix asphalt pavement under accelerated loading. Laboratory tests were performed to develop appropriate material modeling parameters needed to predict test lane performance, and the predicted performance was compared with field observations of performance. The paper offers the following conclusions: there is a good agreement between FLEXPASS predictions and observed field performance , and FLEXPASS can be used to successfully model Louisiana flexible pavements; and the use of modified binders should be extended in all flexible pavement layers in the light of the superior performance of crumb rubber modified hot mix pavement.
