Non-Invasive Temperature Imaging Using Ultrasound Echo Strain: Preliminary Simulations

1997
Focused ultrasound surgery (FUS) is currently being studied and developed for application to the local control of cancer and the treatment of various benign pathologies. The role of non-invasive imaging methods in facilitating the these applications of FUS can be described as: 1. planning, which involves localization of the pathology to be treated, 2. targeting which, in addition to (1), requires localizing the FUS lesion prior to its formation, 3. treatment monitoring, which requires the ability to image with high contrast the location and extent of regions of ablated tissue, 4. monitoring of response, which among other things involves non-invasive assessment of changes in tissue architecture and blood flow.
