Action of a diffracted shock wave on an obstacle

The interaction between a strong shock wave emerging from an axisymmetric duct and a plate perpendicular to the duct axis is studied experimentally and numerically. Series of schlieren-photos of the process and a comparison of the photos with the numerical calculations make it possible to determine the flow parameter field in various stages of the interaction. The action of the shock wave diffracted from the open duct end on the plate is compared with the action of a pulse jet emerging from a reflecting sonic nozzle at the duct end
