A METHOD FOR REDUCING THE GROUND TREMOR AND BUILDING VIBRATION CAUSED BY EXCITING FORCES ON A TUNNEL FLOOR ---INTERNOISE 84. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION FOR NOISE CONTROL. PROCEEDINGS 1984 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NOISE CONTROL ENGINEERING, HONOLULU, HAWAII, 3-5 DECEMBER 1984, VOLUMES 1 AND 2.

Mechanical low pass filters and dynamic vibration absorbers are typically used as countermeasures to prevent ground vibrations from being transmitted to buildings. This paper proposes the use of several dynamic vibration absorbers on a hard angular footing. If the building is firmly mounted on the footing, the energy in the vibrating building radiates from the soil foundation interface and dissipates into the ground by wave propogation. Results of field experiments during the construction of an experimental house just above an open cut tunnel for freight trains, indicate that large radiation damping can be expected, with the defects of such dynamic vibration absorbers being overcome.
