Electromagnetic Field in Social Perception – Myths and Conspiracy Theories

2020
Electromagnetic field, or wider electromagnetism, of the frequency from the lower part of the spectrum (nonionizing range) is one of the physical phenomena which are not seen by human receptors, like hearing, seeing, touching, sniffing and tasting. Therefore, the electromagnetic field can be sensed by human only by its effects, i.e. wireless transmission, warming some objects, moving something, and the like. Such situation evokes anxiety among people and creates conspiracy theories, myths and urban legends. The paper discusses some of the most popular theories connected with the electromagnetic field in general and it is especially focused on the particular problems of 5G technology and coronavirus pandemics. The paper also deals with the psycho-sociological aspects of creating conspiracy theories and the ways of eliminating them.
