Italian Multicentric Study on Diabetic Uremic Patients Treated by CAPD

A multicenter evaluation of diabetic patients undergoing CAPD has compared results to those of nondiabetic patients treated by CAPD and of diabetic patients treated by hemodialysis. The study involved 22 Italian dialysis centers and evaluated 97 diabetic patients and 764 nondiabetic patients who were comparable in age. The mortality rate was higher in the diabetic group, but the peritonitis rate was similar. The technique survival rate was lower in the diabetic patients. The patient survival rate was no different when diabetic patients treated by CAPD were compared to the diabetic group treated by hemodialysis. Moreover, when high risk nondiabetic patients were compared to the diabetic group, CAPD patient survival rates were comparable. CAPD is a useful treatment for diabetic uremic patients.
