Enhancement of mechanical properties of Al–Mg alloy with a high Mg content solidified under high pressures

2011
The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Al–32Mg alloys solidified under high pressures were investigated. The results demonstrate that the β phase is not formed and the γ phase appears under high pressures. The amount of α-Al increases with increasing pressure, resulting in greatly enhanced mechanical properties. The Al–32Mg alloy solidified under 3 GPa has remarkably improved ultimate tensile strength compared to the alloy solidified under normal pressure, as well as relatively higher yield strength and elongation.
