Cistoadenoma mucinoso de apêndice em mulher idosa Mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix in elderly woman

Mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix is a rare diagnosis. Its main clinical presentation is acute or chronic pain in the right iliac fossa, which may mimic acute appendicitis or inflammatory bowel disease. In the transoperative stage its aspect may be mistaken for malignant neoplasm. The case reported here describes an elderly patient with picture of acute pain in the left lower quadrant of the abdomen, submitted to exploratory laparotomy due to suspected acute appendicitis. In the transoperative stage right ileocolectomy was performed because of suspicion of a malignant neoplastic process, but the anatomicopathological examination showed mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix.
