Behavior of vehicle drivers while approaching an intersection after the traffic light signal changes from green to yellow

2018
The article presents the results of research on the behavior of vehicle drivers while approaching the intersection, after the traffic light signal changes from green to yellow. In the above mentioned situation, the driver is required to stop the vehicle. Questionnaire surveys were conducted on a group of two hundred road traffic participants. The scope of the survey was the knowledge on how to react accordingly in the risk triggering situations. The objective of the survey was to get to know the participants' state of knowledge in the specified road traffic situation. The results were compared with the calculations and analyzes of possible behavior patterns arising from the legal regulations in force. Three rational procedure scenarios were selected. Each scenario is describing a possible reaction before the intersection after the transmission of a green signal has ended. The surprise reaction of the driver caused by the change of the signal and insufficient time for correct reaction, which is needed in order to evaluate the situation appropriately, results very often in the road traffic collisions or road traffic accidents. Therefore, it is crucial for the vehicle's driver to have the ability to react accordingly based on the acquired knowledge.
