Herpes simplex virus is a relatively rare cause of opportunistic infections involving the brain in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients. Newer methods of diagnosis include herpes simplex virus (HSV) DNA polymerase chain reaction. Rising trend of acyclovir resistance is a cause for concern. (authors)
