Microsurgical treatment of intraspinal enterogenous cysts in children

Objective To summarize the microsurgical treatment of intraspinal enterogenous cysts in 12 children cases.Methods From January 2005 to April 2012,12 children with intraspinal enterogenous cysts were treated in our department Clinical data of patients including clinical manifestations,image features,microsurgery,and therapeutic outcomes were analyzed retrospectively.Results Microsurgery was dehvered to all patients:7 received total removal while the rest received subtotal removal.Significant improvements in neurological functions were found in all cases in the early stage after operation.The patients were followed up from 6 months to 4 years,all of them recovered from motor deficits and sensory disorders except that one patient improved his myodynamia of unilateral lower extremity from gradeI of pre-operation to gradeⅣ.No recurrence occurred during the time of follow-up.Conclusions Intraspinal enterogenous cyst is a kind of congenital abnormality,microscopic resection is the only effective rethhod of treatment for intraspinal enterogenous cyst,and total or subtotal removal of the cyst wall can offer a favorable outcome Proper microsurgical manipulation can provide a guarantee for reaching satisfactory effects and avoiding complications Key words: Enterogenous cyst ;  Intraspinal tumor;  Microsurgery
