Comparison of the diagnostic value among different examination methods for breast cancer

Objective To investigate the diagnostic value of breast specific gamma imaging (BSGI) , mammography (MMG) , ultrasonography (US) and combined examination for breast cancer. Methods The clinical data of 95 patients with breast tumor hospitalized in our hospital between March 2012 and January 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. All the patients underwent surgery. The BSGI, MMG and US findings before the operation were collected, and compared with the pathological findings after the operation. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of different examination methods for the diagnosis of breast cancer were evaluated. Results In 95 patients, 63 were diagnosed with breast cancer (67 lesions) and 32 were diagnosed with benign breast lesions (40 lesions) by pathology after the operation. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of BSGI, MMG, US, BSGI+MMG, BSGI+US, MMG+US were [95.2% (60/63) , 82.5% (52/63) , 93.7% (59/63) , 77.8% (49/63) , 90.5% (57/63) and 77.8% (49/63)], [75.0% (24/32) , 75.0% (24/32 ) , 65.6% (21/32) , 87.5% (28/32) , 84.4% (27/32) and 84.4% (27/32)], [88.4% (84/95) , 80.0% (76/95) , 84.2% (80/95) , 81.1% (77/95) , 88.4% (84/95) and 80.0% (76/95)], [88.2% (60/68) , 86.7% (52/60) , 84.3%(59/70) , 92.5% (49/53) , 91.9% (57/62) and 90.7% (49/54)], and [88.9% (24/27) , 68.6% (24/35) , 84.0% (21/25) , 66.7% (28/42) , 81.8% (27/33) and 65.9% (27/41)] , respectively. Seven breast tissues with dense breast cancer were missed by MMG but were determined by BSGI and US. Conclusion BSGI shows certain clinical value for the diagnosis of breast cancer, effectively supporting MMG and US.
