The smart city of Torino

2019
Abstract Among the cities nowadays involved in sustainable and smart urban planning, this chapter focuses on the city of Torino, located in the Piedmont region in the North of Italy. Torino was involved in many national and international projects toward a smart city vision, leading the city to develop its own “smart city” program and to tackle many challenges, such as involving cooperation with the private and public sector. In this framework the municipality devoted specific internal expertise to develop and manage the program autonomously, involving the other partners during the operative and executive phases. The chapter assesses and analyzes the ongoing and planned relevant experiences to establish a long-term structural “smart” planning framework in the city and analyzes, for the first time, the performance of the “city smartness” making use of the methodology provided by the World Council of City Data. In the future, it is suggested to include ideas and actions into the program within 2030 and beyond, which may provide higher awareness about the impacts of long-term measures and policies, supporting better decision-making.
