Evaluation of whitlockite through conventional hydrothermal method and its in-vitro erythrocyte compatibility and antibacterial activity

2020
Whitlockite (WH) is a biomaterial which is present in infant bone and also present in dentin. WH is a mixed composition of calcium orthophosphate along with partly substituted magnesium to accomplish the biological conditions. It is synthesized through hydrothermal method, the XRD crystalline patterns matched with Ca18Mg2(HPO4)2(PO4)12 (Whitlockite magnesium) heterogeneous phase. FT-IR spectra showed Si-O-Si and P-O stretching and bending vibrations. Erythrocyte compatibility was evaluated with the minimal lysis of 2.9% and improved antibacterial activity was noted against gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria.
