Coxsackie viruses, particularly those of group B (types 1–5) are the most frequent reported cause of acute viral myocarditis [1–3]. These viruses have repeatedly been isolated from heart tissue and pericardial fluid at postmortem [4] and it would appear that Coxsackie B viruses are the only viruses isolated from the myocardium during life [5, 6].
