Study on the Improvement of Safety at Signalized Intersections with a Lagging Green Phase

2002
The purpose of this study is to specify countermeasures in order to improve safety at signalized intersections with a lagging green phase and to evaluate the effectiveness of these countermeasures. From the viewpoint of practical use, concrete countermeasures as an alternative to lagging signal control were indicated clearly. During the last two fiscal years, these countermeasures were actually implemented at 61 intersections in the Tokyo Metropolitan area. Before and after countermeasures, we analyzedthe annual number of injury accidents at intersections where measures were carried out. As a result, it was shown that these countermeasures contributed to the decrease in the number of accident.
