How to promote pro-environmental behaviour in organizations: the message matters

2016
Environmental management and sustainable development practices in organizations — so called “corporate greening” approaches — currently make up a very bountiful area and at the same time a pressing concern for managers, practitioners and researchers alike. However, literature shows that most interventions on improving sustainable behaviours until now have been carried out only in the private sphere. The current paper aims to explore the efficacy of norm-based interventions for improving employeesengagement in discretionary, extra-role pro-environmental behaviours. Our study employed a quasi-experimental research design, with pre-test and post-test measures applied to a sample of 84 employees from a number of private companies in Romania. Results provided no support for the efficacy of a normbased intervention in improving such behaviours over time in an organizational setting. Limitations of the current study and avenues for future research are discussed.
