Julia Uceda and the Work of Invisible Grace

2018
AbstractCatholic theology defines grace in general as a gift of God to human beings, and sanctifying grace as the kind that remains in the soul. The operation of invisible grace is not, strictly speaking, a Catholic one in Julia Uceda’s writings, though it shares the influence of a common spiritual source. Uceda’s poetry and stories are filled with invisible people and presences, made invisible by circumstance, character, and the fundamental nature of existence, but are they touched by grace? This essay explores that question in her only book of stories, Luz sobre un friso.
