Theassociation between haemospermia andsevere hypertension

1991
Summary: Theassociation between haemospermia andhypertension wasexamined inacase-control study comparing 5hypertensive patients withhaemospermia to20age-matched hypertensive men. Patients with haemospermia hadmuchhigher blood pressures than hypertensive controls (200/131 mmHg vs147/90 mmHg;P< 0.0005/P < 0.0001), higher left ventricular voltage onECG (P< 0.02), and higher concentrations ofserumcreatinine, proteinuria andrenovascular disease (all P =0.06 vscontrols). Haemospermia isassociated withsevere uncontrolled hypertension. Itisnot, however, associated with hypertensionper se, astheprevalence ofhypertension inpublished series ofpatients withhaemospermia is nohigher thanthat expected inthegeneral population. Menpresenting with haemospermia should have their blood pressure measured carefully asthey mayrequire antihypertensive treatment urgently.
