Preliminary results from investigations at Kilgii Gwaay: An early holocene archaeological site on Ellen Island, Haida Gwaii, British Columbia

Gwaii, British Columbia (Figures 1, 2). The island is approximately 6 hectares in area and is positioned in Houston Stewart Channel between Moresby Island and Kunghit Island. Cultural deposits at this site include a surface lag of lithic artifacts on a boulderstrewn, gravel and shell hash (secondary deposit of shell fragments) beach (Figure 3) , as well as subsurface cultural remains. The site was first located by a Haida archaeologist in 1990 (Wanagun 1990). At that time, some 1,200 lithic artifacts were surface collected. In 2000
