Excavations at Tel Jezreel 1992–1993: Second Preliminary Report

AbstractThis report describes the results of the excavations of Tel Jezreel in Israel, directed by the authors, in the third and fourth seasons in 1992 and 1993. First, the report describes the expedition and surveys the development of the excavation. It then describes the probes cut at the southern and western sides of the site to delimit the edges of the Iron Age enclosure, and discusses the various excavation fields and the work carried out in them. Finally the report summarizes the main results of the seasons under discussion. Regarding the Iron Age enclosure—the line of the fortifications on the western side was determined, and therefore the size of the enclosure became known. The main gate of the enclosure was uncovered, and the excavation of the two corner towers on its eastern side was completed. Regarding later periods, the Byzantine settlement is now better understood, and further parts of the medieval church were uncovered.
