Summary of the properties of the lanthanide and actinide elements

1996
The chemical properties, ion exchange behaviour, oxidation states, ion types and stabilities, ionic radii, electronic structures, and crystal structures of the 14 lanthanides (plus lanthanum) and the 14 actinides (plus actinium) are discussed on a comparative basis. The analogous positions of these two groups of elements in the periodic table are described. Also included are tables outlining the above properties and identifying the discoverers of these 30 elements. A discussion on the practical applications of many of the lanthanides and actinides is also included. (author). 13 refs., 3 figs., 12 tabs.
