Biological anaerobic treatment of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons

1995
Groundwater from an industrial site in the Netherlands is contaminated with perchloroethylene (PCE), trichlorethylene (TCE), cis-and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene (DCE) and dichloromethane. Anaerobic degradation of these compounds by methanogenic bacteria has been demonstrated in several laboratory studies. In this project groundwater from the location is treated in labscale bioreactors and in a pilotscale bioreactor.
