Metabolic Syndrome and Arterial Hypertension. The metabolic syndrome is defined by the presence of different metabolic factors which lead to a higher risk for new-onset type-2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular events. Arterial hypertension is of special interest in this setting. Insulin resistance and obesity contribute to the development of arterial hypertension and, especially in combination with the metabolic syndrome, arterial hypertension is an important risk factor for future cardiovascular events. This article highlights a variety of drugs for the treatment of arterial hypertension in the setting of metabolic syndrome. J Hypertonie 2013; 17 (2): 59–64.
