A Novel Wireless Communication System using Programmable Metasurface Operating at 28 GHz

2020
In communication technology, a programmable metasurface (PM) is a promising antenna array concept to overcome the severe path loss at millimeter-wave (mmW) frequencies. It enables electronically steerable beamforming by using a normal feeding antenna without the need of parallel radio frequency (RF) chains as conventional multiple input multiple output (MIMO) and phased array structures. These advantages offer PM the chance to be a part of future communication developments. In this work, a novel communication system using a PM operating at 28 GHz is presented. In order to prove the system performance, communication signal transmission as well as an exhaustive channel estimation algorithm have been implemented. The measurement results show great system performances, which nicely match with theoretic results.
