α-Oxidation of long-chain fatty acids in cell-free extracts of Arthrobacter simplex

Abstract Cell-free extracts of Arthrobacter simplex catalyzed the conversion of palmitic acid to α-hydroxypalmitic acid, and also the conversion of the latter to pentadecanoic acid. This finding provides definite proof for the bacterial α-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids.
