Reflecting on current applications of design for behaviour change

2017
This chapter reviews the current engagement with and applications of design for behaviour change approaches reported in the preceding five chapters. The chapter begins with an overview of design for behaviour change models, processes and tools that have been applied within the five domains of sustainability, health and wellbeing, social design, safety and design against crime. The overview shows that several of the models and tools discussed in Part 2 have been applied in the examples of Part 3, or have been used to understand and analyze them. It also highlights several more approaches that have not been explicitly discussed in Part 2. These include co-design, participation and design activism, which are discussed in more detail later in this chapter. These three concepts can be seen as related to what we call an expansion of the design ambition, which shifts attention from the historical focus on products to the broader approach of design thinking (e.g. Brown, 2008).
