Concurrent occurrence of coligranuloma, nodular taeniasis and mesothelioma in a poultry flock

2013
Two out of 15 poultry carcasses necropsied have revealed the presence of white, solid multiple nodular lesions of varying sizes in mesentry, liver, intercostal muscles and lungs. Cultural examination of heart blood revealed presence of Escheria coli. On histopathological examination, the presence of caseous necrotic areas surrounded by abundant fibrous tissue with less inflammatory response could be appreciated in the adventitial layer of the intestine. Presence of cut-sections of the tapeworm segments in the lumen as well as in the subserosa of the intestine confirmed the case as nodular taeniasis. The granulomas in the mesentry, intercostal muscles and the nodular lesion in the liver however revealed papillomatous projections to tubulo-acinar pattern of proliferating cells supported by a fine fibrovascular stroma which was diagnosed as mesothelioma.
