A physical activity programme for primary school children

2015
This research paper focuses on developing a physical activity programme for children aged four to eleven years attending state primary schools in the United Kingdom. The rationale for targeting this group is explained and the physical activity programme developed is closely linked to UK government guidelines and policy, which strongly focuses on health promotion, disease prevention and reducing health inequalities. Current guidelines suggest that all children should be engaging in at least 60 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity every day of the week and that activity should develop strength and flexibility and improve bone health. These elements are acknowledged in the proposed programme and a balance component is also included, which is based on alternative evidence. In developing a programme, sustainability is an important issue to consider; physical activity should therefore not be seen as a burden, enjoyment for all and consideration of individual needs are essential components.
