The Tragedy of Covid-19 Pandemic and its Implication on US–China Relations

2020
The paper examines the tragedy of Covid-19 pandemic and its implication on U.SChina relations. Methodologically, the paper used secondary sources of data. Hegemonic stability theory was adopted as framework of analysis. Findings from the paper revealed that both countries did not managed Covid-19 very well at the early stage, China on one hand was very secretive about the contagious nature of the disease while the disagreement between the Republican and Democratic Parties in the United States was not useful in addressing the problem. Findings further revealed that the delay by the World Health Organization in declaring Covid-19 a Global Health Emergency equally stalled the degree of response by world leaders especially the United States which felt earlier that the disease can vanish within a space of time due to lack of proper knowledge about the disease. The paper recommends that both U.S and China must see themselves as partners capable of salvaging the world, this can be achieve through joint development of vaccines to reduce the danger pose by the virus. Both countries should assist developing countries in fighting the disease by providing them with protective health care, test kits, and pharmaceuticals as well as support them in combating famines that might result from the pandemic. This will further enhance their diplomatic portfolios in international plane and reduce rivalry between Washington and Beijing
