Study of calcium carbonate precipitation in a single solar basin distiller

2011
A limiting factor in solar stills for the production of purified water is the precipitation of salts in the still basin. The objective of this work was the study of isothermic precipitation of CaCO3 in a experimental solar still using groundwater as water supply with high concentrations of soluble calcium and sulfates. Three experiments of calcium and bicarbonates reaction were performed. The first experiment was followed during 5 hours with incrustations free still, the second, during 9 hours with incrustations and the third experiment in a 8 hours period with 72 hours of previous contact between the solution and the precipitate. During the first two hours in the three experiments, 71.70, 273.00 and 400.70 mg of CaCO3 were formed respectively. In the precipitate was found calcite as only crystalline phase.
