Influence of the Choice of the Parameters on Constitutive Models and their Effects on the Results of Ti6Al4V Orthogonal Cutting Simulation

2020
Abstract A pertinent set of parameters is equally important as a constitutive model that describes the material behavior in modeling and finite element simulation of the machining process. The purpose of this study is to show the influence of the parameters on constitutive models by comparing and investigating three constitutive laws. The first is the original Johnson-Cook model, the second is the modified Johnson-Cook model that takes the strain softening behavior into account and the third is the modified Johnson-Cook model that introduces a temperature dependent hardening factor. This paper deals with the modelling and simulation of the orthogonal cutting process with those three constitutive models with different sets of constitutive model parameters and highlights their influence on the results. Forces and chip morphology from the numerical simulations are compared with an experimental orthogonal cutting reference for validation and determination of the best combination.
