Age related histomorphological changes in the cerebral arteries of domestic pig
1971
Abstract Thirty pigs, ranging from 2 days to 10 yr of age, were used for this investigation which revealed progressive age-associated histomorphologic changes. The initial changes were splitting, fraying and duplication of internal elastic lamina. The intimal thickenings encountered in the adult pig increased progressively both in frequency and severity with advancing age. The subendothelial space gradually increased and became fibrosed with aging. The smooth muscle cells of the tunica media decreased in density and number with aging. They were replaced by collagen and acid mucopolysaccharides. The intimal thickenings became fibrous with advancing age.
