A note on the susceptibility of N. gonorrhoeae to contraceptive agent Nonyl-P.

1973
In this British study the contraceptive agent nonyl phenoxyl polyethoxy ethanol (Nonyl-P) was found to interfere with the growth of N. gonorrhoeae. With an agar plate technique .6% Nonyl-P was found to completely inhibit growth after the organisms were exposed for 30 minutes. .4% brought scanty growth while .2% resulted in no inhibition. A .6% concentration is less than the estimated concentration produced by a 1.75 ml pessary of 5% Nonyl-P after the compound is diluted by vaginal fluid and ejaculate. Nonyl-P could conceivably help to halt the spread of gonorrhea.
