Variations in the protein and lipid levels in the catfish Arius arius (Hamilton) in relation to season and feeding

2011
Arius arius collected from Cochin backwaters during premonsoon, monsoon and postmonsoon (April to November) seasons were analysed for gut content, feeding behaviour, as well as protein and lipid levels in relation to seasons. Marked variations in the quantity and quality of feed, condition of fullness of the stomach and nutritive value of flesh were noticed between seasons. The bulk of the feed consisted of crustaceans, small fishes and molluscs indicating carnivorous food habit. The lipid contents in the muscle exhibited variations, while protein level was more or less stable irrespective of season and feed. It has been observed that A. arius is no way inferior to any other quality fish based on its nutritional value.
