Setting Cut Scores

2015
This chapter discusses the process of setting cut scores and other performance standards in contexts in which employment equity or litigation may be a concern. The chapter begins by discussing key definitions and concepts relevant to setting cut scores. The chapter also describes key considerations in the cut-score setting process, and the legal context in which cut scores are critiqued. Major decision points relating to selection and implementation of standard-setting processes are presented, as well as an overview of common standard-setting methods. Finally, the chapter presents three case studies illustrating how a cut-score-setting process can be implemented in a equity-sensitive environment.
