Halophilous diatoms in Czech running waters: Pleurosira laevis and Bacillaria paxillifera

2007
Even though most natural salt marshes and saline waters became in the CR extinct, halophilous diatoms still survive in czech running waters. In 2006 two remarkable diatoms Pleurosira laevis and Bacillaria paxillifera, appeared in river stretches, where halophilous diatoms do not normally occur. Well developed populations of the first species occupied the bottom of the Bilina River. This is its first record from the CR. The second species was found in Ostravice, Odra, Labe and Jizera Rivers. For the last time this peculiar diatom was observed in the CR in 1960ies.
