Structure observed in solar‐particle latitude profiles and its dependence on rigidity

Latitude profiles of solar protons with energies greater than 1 Mev, 33 Mev, and 114 Mev and solar electrons with energies greater than 35 kev are discussed and compared with the cutoff rigidity calculations of D. F. Smart et al. (1969). The measurements indicate that a field model could be chosen to give agreement between trajectory calculations and measured knee latitudes for 114-Mev protons and 35-kev electrons but that 1-Mev and 33-Mev protons penetrate more deeply into the magnetic field than could be accounted for on the basis of such calculations. Sometimes intensity changes, not associated with the knee latitude, occur in the 1-Mev and 33-Mev distributions at latitudes that coincide approximately with calculated cutoffs.
