Introduction to the scientific study of language, with special attention to English phonology, morphology, syntax and social variation. Of special interest to prospective teachers. Not open to students with credit in Linguistics 520. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to * Describe and classify phonemes and the rules governing their production; * Identify and categorize morphemes and their functions; * Recognize parts of speech and understand their primary syntactic functions; * Analyze selected phonological, morphological and syntactic data; * Understand the nature and extent of sociolinguistic variations in English.
