The exploration on the relationship between cultural-self and communication skills, self-effacement, and assertive behavior of Japanese DIA 23

2014
The purpose of the research is to explore the predictive relations between cultural-self and Japanese communication skills (’perceptive ability’ and ’self-restraint’ sub-dimensions), ’Expression of Self-Effacement’ and ’Assertive Behavior’. The respondents are 182 Japanese female university students. The two dimensions of cultural-self were set as exogenous variables; and other variables were set as endogenous variables. The path analyses were conducted by AMOS software. The results showed that ’Independent-Self’ was only the cause of ’Assertive Behavior’. On the contrary, ’Interdependent-Self’ was the causes of all four endogenous variables. Using by the median split on the each respondent’s self-esteem score, the respondents were divided into 2 groups. The results of relatively low self-esteem ( n  = 94) showed the almost same relations as in the all respondents. On the other hand, the results of relatively high self-esteem ( n  = 88) showed the different causal relations. The implications of these differences in Japanese were discussed.
