Investigation of The Psychological Status of The High School Students with Regard to Their Sociodemographic Characteristics

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the students' psychological well being and the gender, socioeconomical status and the grades of the high school students. Method: 482 students from 5 state and 2 private high-schools participated into this study. The Youth Self Report 11-18 and the information form developed by the investigators were given to the students. Results: The boys and the girls had significantly different scores on the problem behaviors subunits of the Youth Self Report; somatic complaints, anxious-depressed, delinquent behavior, internalizing and the total problem scores revealed differences. It was also found that students from the families with high socioeconomical status had higher scores on delinquent behavior subunit than the students from lower socioeconomical status. Finally the analyses showed that the students from different grades had different scores for the social problems, internalizing, externalizing, delinquent behaviors and the total problems. Discussion: The results show that psychological well being of the students differs according to the gender, socioeconomical status and grades of students. The necessity to conduct such studies and the importance of finding solutions to the problems of students were discussed in the present study.
